"IT" based e-Governance is the need of the day to increase the efficiency of Railways. This helps in fulfilling the expectation of the citizens of the country from Indian Railways. Two "IT" based applications, Track Management System (TMS) and Indian Railways Projects Sanctions & Management (IRPSM) are big steps towards paperless e-governance, which is revolutionising the working of the Engineering Department.

Few modules of TMS viz. Track Machines Progress, Scrap, etc. have been implemented in all the 68 divisions & 16 zones of Indian Railways. TMS has so far been commissioned in 28 divisions over 14 zonal railways. In three railway zones, namely South Central Railway (SCR), South East Central Railway (SECR) and Northern Railway (NR), TMS has been commissioned in all divisions. In addition it is under commissioning over 19 more divisions. Shortly, TMS will be implemented/commissioned in all the remaining divisions of Indian Railways also.

IRPSM has been commissioned for complete Indian Railways. This has not only brought in efficiency in this area of working but also saved lot of paper work and paper.

All Railway officials should adopt and use various IT based applications/systems to increase their efficiency & effectiveness.
